OUR MISSION

Dr. H. Wayne Hendrick

"The mission of the Hendrick Scholarship Foundation is to provide the means for qualified students who have had adversities to enroll in college and, with continued moral and financial encouragement and support, to graduate."

Dr. H. Wayne Hendrick, Superintendent (retired, Plano Independent School District)

BACKGROUND

The Hendrick Academy of Honor was established in 1991 as a 501(3)(c) nonprofit organization to provide college scholarships for local high school graduates who have overcome adversity. It was named to honor Dr. Hendrick's immeasurable contributions as the former superintendent of the Plano Independent School District. Dr. Hendrick is known for his kindness, his recognition of each individual's worth, and his ability to encourage people to not give up in times of adversity. The offering of scholarships is a wonderful way to honor Dr. Hendrick's character and legacy.

Since 1991, Hendrick has provided scholarships for over 200 young men and women.

OUR PURPOSE

There are growing numbers of youth in our community who aspire to get a college education but have no financial or emotional support to do so. If they have put forth the sustained diligent effort to graduate from high school in spite of their adversities, then we will help "open the door" to college by providing scholarships and mentoring support.

Students whose lives are consumed with financial and emotional survival are typically not able to fully focus on their studies or to devote time to extracurricular and/or volunteer activities. These students therefore don't fit the typical profile of those who would be considered competitive to win scholarships - not because of lack of interest or ability but rather due to lack to opportunity. These are the students that we seek to help through our program.

Along with having financial need, the primary eligibility criteria for our scholarship is that the student has persevered in overcoming significant adversity.

OUR VISION

To date, the Foundation has offered scholarships to students from the Plano school district. The need, of course, reaches all school districts. Our long term goal is be able to help students from anywhere in Collin County.
