College Placement Tests

Colleges use placement tests such as COMPASS or Accuplacer to determine whether new students are academically prepared to enroll in college level coursework. These tests assess your levels in Math, English, and Reading. If your score is below a certain level, then you are placed into developmental (pre-college level) coursework.

From a student's perspective, your placement test results are important because they determine whether you can start taking college level (i.e. credit bearing) classes or not.

Preparing for the Placement Test

If you have recently graduated from high school and did not take an advanced math class in your senior year, you are likely to have forgotten some of the math that you had learned earlier.

If you are an adult who has been out of high school for a number of years, you are likely to have forgotten much of your math.

We recommend that you do a review of math before you take the placement test so that you can refresh your knowledge. By doing so, your placement test scores will be a more accurate reflection of what you learned or didn't learn versus what you used to know but forgot.

What is the A+dvancer™?

Advancer

The A+dvancer is an online web-based learning tool which provides self-paced "courses" in Math, Sentence Skills, or Reading. Advancer™is aligned with the COMPASS and Accuplacer tests and therefore is designed to cover the skills that will be on the tests.

The courses are meant to provide a review or a refresher - not to teach the material to you for the first time. There is a diagnostic test at the beginning of each course which identifies which skills you need to review. Then you will be "prescribed" lessons so that you are only spending time on the material that you are weak in and not on what you already know.

Math courses are offered in Arithematic, Elementary Algebra, College Algebra, and Trigonometry/Pre-calculus.

Hendrick provides A+dvancer™ courses for our scholarship students but we realize that there are many other students who also need access to this resource. Since students can only access A+dvancer™ through an organization, we are offering access through ours.
